Ik rolde zonder omwegen de wereld van de fotografie in. Het begon allemaal met een paar beelden op lichtgevoelig papier.

Mijn vader leerde me mijn eigen foto’s ontwikkelen. Hij was degene die me leerde kijken en fotograferen.

Later kwam de interesse voor 3D-fotografie, full-spectrumfotografie maar ook voor time-lapse en luchtfotografie (met drones).

Humanism is a secular life stance. Its starting point is that humans are part of nature, born free and equal in dignity and rights, endowed with reason and conscience.

Humanists hold that existence has no pre-determined meaning. Everyone is free to find meaning and purpose in their own life, through personal reflection, social interaction and the rich culture humanity has created in science, philosophy and the arts.

Humanism promotes rationality. Critical inquiry, well-founded reasoning and scientific methods are regarded as the best tools for acquiring reliable knowledge about the world.

Humanists encourage critical examination of all ideas and opinions, including their own. The aim is to seek out the strongest arguments and to be willing to change one’s mind and adjust one’s convictions when they prove to be mistaken. Freedom of speech is essential for testing opinions in open debate.

Humanists regard democracy, the rule of law and human rights as crucial, rationally justified values. Humans are part of a society and share responsibility for one another and for the environment, both locally and globally. It is essential to ensure that the planet remains habitable for future generations.

Humanism promotes equality for all. Humanists respect freedom of belief and the right of every person to choose their own life stance. The state should be secular and should not grant special privileges to any particular life stance.

Vrijzinnig is een toevoeging die de nadruk nog sterker legt op het vrije, onafhankelijke denken.

Belangrijk is dat geloof en vrijzinnig humanisme elkaar niet noodzakelijk uitsluiten. Toch is het – mijns inziens – onmogelijk een ‘geopenbaarde godsdienst’ (jodendom, islam, christendom) volledig te verzoenen met het idee van rationaliteit dat fundamenteel is voor het humanisme. Er bestaan geen rationele bewijzen voor de beweringen in Thora, Koran of Bijbel. Er wordt niet geloofd omdat het zo wordt voorgeschreven, maar er wordt onderzocht en alleen aanvaard wat – vandaag (maar misschien niet morgen) – met de grootste waarschijnlijkheid juist lijkt.
